Walton McCarthy

Walton W. McCarthy - PRESIDENT AND PRINCIPLE ENGINEERING

Walton McCarthy is the president and Principle Engineer of Radius Engineering Inc. He is a mechanical engineer with a B.S. from Montana State University. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The American Society of Testing and Materials, the Composite Fabricators Association, and serves on a technical Advisory Board of The American Civil Defense Association (TACDA).

McCarthy's research started in 1978 when he was privately funded for educational research which formed the basis of his first book, THE NUCLEAR SHELTERIST. He thereafter wrote PRINCIPLES OF PROTECTION, The US Handbook of NBC Weapon Fundamentals and Shelter Engineering Design Standards, known in the industry as P.O.P. This book, now in its fifth edition for 2002, has become the engineering bible for shelter engineering in the US.

McCarthy has designed and built over 550 shelters using steel, concrete, wood, and fiberglass, Some of his contributions to the engineering and civil defense filed include developing a new rating system for underground shelters to determine radiation doses inside a shelter known as the Total Rems in Shelter system or TRS; developing the Overpressure Choking Theory to negate the use of blast valves; developing fiberglass structures composed of multiple compound curves designed to resist multiple external pressures; and developing various underground shelter emergency escape methods.

Radius Engineering Inc. (bomb-shelter.net) has become the national leader in underground shelter technology.

McCarthy is a private pilot which enables him to travel on his or the customer's schedule. When commercial airlines suffer from strikes, mechanical problems, scheduling problems, etc. McCarthy will find a way to make his appointment with his customer or outside contractors.

McCarthy has used his HAM Radio experience to properly equip shelters and train shelterists to use a HAM Radio enabling communication with other people without being dependant on the conventional telephone system which has proven to be undependable during disasters such as Hurricane Hogo, 911, Hurricane Katrina, and Rita. Using the shelter radio package, shelterists can call for help, get medical advice, and report tactical information to First Responders, Red Cross, FEMA, Search and Rescue, contractors, etc.
